Adventures into the San Jauns 8/2025
Silverton gave us the kind of trip you don’t forget—the messy, beautiful, real kind.
We set up camp at Silverton Lakes Campground, which ended up being the perfect base for everything we had planned. For being tucked into the mountains, it had all the comforts we needed—hot showers (a lifesaver after long dusty days), a full-service store, and a front desk that made it feel a little less like we were completely off the grid. Still, once the sun dropped, the cold crept in fast. Tent camping in the San Juan Mountains isn’t for the weak, especially with that smoky haze from nearby fires hanging in the air.
Days were packed with exploring. We took on the Alpine Loop, pushed through Imogene Pass, and wandered into the unreal beauty of Yankee Boy Basin and Silver Basin. Every trail had its own personality—tight shelf roads, rocky climbs, and views that didn’t even look real. The Jeeps definitely kept us on our toes, acting up just enough to remind us we were earning every mile. And of course, Joseph running out of fuel turned into one of those stories we’ll probably laugh about forever… just not in the moment.
Back at camp, we kept things simple—grilling food, hanging out, and just being together. Those evenings hit different. No rush, no distractions, just the sound of the mountains and a sky that feels bigger than anywhere else.
One of the best moments? Letting Axel take the wheel on a dirt road. Watching that mix of excitement and focus—it’s something you can’t really put into words. Just one of those proud, “this is what it’s all about” kind of memories.
We made our way into town too, wandering the streets of Silverton, Colorado and stopping for dinner at The Coffee Bear. After long days on the trails, sitting down for a hot meal felt like a reward we didn’t take for granted.
It wasn’t perfect—cold nights, smoky air, mechanical hiccups—but that’s what made it ours. The kind of trip where everything doesn’t go right, but somehow it ends up being exactly what you needed anyway.
